Things that make your photos look unprofessional

Having access to smartphones and their built-in cameras, DIY photography is thriving. Whereas DIY photos often do the trick for a social media post, if you want your business to stand out and have a professional look, you need professional imagery. Even photos taken with DSLR or mirrorless cameras can look off if the product photos weren’t taken and edited by a professional photographer. In this article, we will look at the things that make your photos look unprofessional.

Alignment

Alignment issues are common both on websites and on social media. That’s when the table your product is standing on is not straight, or a building is leaning. Whereas alignment can be adjusted in the smartphone’s photo app, adjusting the perspective is more complicated and requires editing software like Photoshop.

White Balance

When you are shooting with natural or artificial light, the light you are working with is going to have a colour temperature. This is measured on a scale of Kelvins and it goes all the way from yellow to blue. So when you take a picture in natural light, you may find that at certain times of the day the light is yellow, other times it’s blue. We have to compensate it in our camera to make sure that the picture we get is consistent and the colours are true to what they really are. Besides, the white balance can be influenced by the subject you are shooting.

Even if you use Auto WB function on your camera, the photos probably won’t come out exactly right and if you don’t adjust the WB in postproduction, the photo will just look off.The human eye can instantly see that something is not quite right and the photo will appear less appealing.

Out of focus

Even when using Auto Focus (AF) on your camera, the camera may not get everything into focus you wanted, or the focus is just not positioned on the subject properly.

Resolution

If the photos are not uploaded to your website in the right resolution, you may end up with a pixely, blurred photo or with a huge photo that loads slowly and ultimately slows down your website.

As you can see it’s very easy to end up with unprofessional photos on your website.

Potential customers want to see consistent photos of your products, services, or skills. Therefore, your products have to be showcased in the best possible way.
